Ireland’s golf sector is set to boost its greens …literally.
A wide range of experts from golf, sport, government and sustainability gathered at The K Club last week to explore how sport can accelerate environmental action and support local communities.
The event highlighted Golf Ireland’s Drive the Green strategy, a multi-year plan to embed sustainability across the game, from biodiversity to energy, water and climate change.
Progress to date and ambitions for the future were showcased alongside insights from national agencies, leading golf clubs, and international best practice.
Opening the forum, Golf Ireland Chair Paul Haran said: “Golf has always been a sport deeply connected to nature. Every swing, fairway, green depends on the health of our environment. We are facing unprecedented challenges – from climate change to resource scarcity – our responsibility as custodians of the game has never been greater. Sustainability in golf is no longer just an option; it’s an imperative.”
Panels addressed biodiversity and water management, sustainable sporting events, and decarbonisation in golf.
Examples included innovative irrigation systems, renewable energy integration, and low-carbon operations.
Speakers stressed the role of technology and data in aligning clubs with national climate targets.
Jonathan Smith, Executive Director of GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation, said: “There is clear momentum emerging in sustainable golf, across the amateur and professional sides of the sport. Thanks to the collaborative leadership of the likes of Golf Ireland and the DP World Tour, more and more grass roots facilities and events are getting involved.”
