The Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) has selected Hemiko as its development partner for a pioneering district heat network.

This low-carbon system will use waste heat from local data centres to provide affordable energy to over 9,000 homes and businesses, including Central Middlesex Hospital.

This UK-first project positions London as a leader in circular economy solutions.

The Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) is a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC), established by the Mayor of London to secure the regeneration of the Old Oak Opportunity area, spanning land in three London boroughs – Ealing, Brent and Hammersmith & Fulham.

The area includes Park Royal industrial estate, the Old Oak development area around the new High Speed 2 Old Oak Common Station and protected land at Wormwood Scrubs.

Backed by £36m from the Green Heat Network Fund and £1.7m from the Mayor’s energy programs, Hemiko will invest £63m initially, growing to £600m by 2040.

The network will support London’s largest regeneration project, delivering homes, commercial space and jobs.

OPDC’s Chief Executive, David Lunts said: OPDC’s innovative new heat network is leading the way in developing greener and cheaper energy for thousands of residents in West London.”

Mete Coban MBE, the Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy, said: “By capturing waste heat from data centres and using it to power heat networks, we’re not only cutting emissions but also driving down energy costs for Londoners and making our city’s infrastructure more resilient.”

The Mayor’s office believes there is enough surplus and wasted heat in London to heat the whole city – we just need heat networks to access it.
