On Friday, GM unveiled a pair of futuristic

Corvette concepts.

00:04.519 –> 00:11.399

The CX and the CXR Vision Gran Turismo, and they

have a canopy that opens like

00:11.399 –> 00:14.779

a fighter jet.

The concepts made their debut at the Quail,

00:14.920 –> 00:18.989

a motorsports gathering held in Carmel,

California.

00:19.319 –> 00:24.590

The novel designs aren’t production vehicles,

but rather serve as inspiration to inform

00:24.590 –> 00:28.829

Corvette’s design language.

The Corvette CX is designed to provide high

00:28.829 –> 00:31.780

performance driving on the road as well as the

track.

00:31.950 –> 00:36.139

While it has many of the Corvette hallmarks,

like a forward-lunging nose,

00:36.509 –> 00:42.830

it also has a fighter jet-inspired cockpit

canopy designed in collaboration with the GM

00:42.830 –> 00:47.834

Motorsports Aero Group.

The CX concept is an all-wheel-drive electric

00:47.834 –> 00:51.825

supercar with a propulsion system that includes

four motors,

00:51.985 –> 00:55.985

one powering each wheel, generating more than

2,000 horsepower.

00:56.075 –> 01:01.075

The 90 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery is

mounted in the chassis for a low center of

01:01.075 –> 01:04.834

gravity.

The project is the latest and last of several

01:04.834 –> 01:11.055

Corvette concepts to be revealed this year, all

as part of GM’s design exercise across multiple

01:11.055 –> 01:15.230

GM studios that empowers

the company’s designers to kind of step away

01:15.230 –> 01:19.230

from the constraints of production vehicles and

unleash their creativity.

01:19.400 –> 01:24.309

If you recall, GM unveiled a 3D-printed

Corvette earlier this year that was created by

01:24.309 –> 01:28.050

GM’s UK team.

The CX concepts came out of the Chevrolet

01:28.050 –> 01:30.309

Performance Studio in Warren, Michigan.

01:30.559 –> 01:37.040

The CXR BGT is a hybrid, a twin-turbo V8 that

generates up to 900 horsepower and

01:37.040 –> 01:40.764

15,000 RPM drives

the rear wheels.

01:40.775 –> 01:46.175

Three electric motors, one on each front wheel, and

a third integrated into an 8-speed gearbox,

01:46.404 –> 01:51.474

provide instant torque and contribute to a

total system output of 2,000 horsepower.

01:51.724 –> 01:56.885

While the most disappointing part of the

project is the caveat in each caption not

01:56.885 –> 02:02.675

available for sale, you will still be able to

test drive the CX and CXR,

02:02.845 –> 02:06.245

at least virtually, in Gran Turismo 7.

02:06.690 –> 02:09.970

And it should be a pretty accurate

representation.

02:10.259 –> 02:15.419

Chevy’s performance engineers and the Corvette

design team sent detailed blueprints to

02:15.419 –> 02:19.809

Polyphony Digital, the Japanese video game

development arm of Sony Interactive

02:19.809 –> 02:23.009

Entertainment that created the popular series.

02:23.419 –> 02:24.529

I’m David Mante.

02:24.779 –> 02:26.220

This is Manufacturing Now.
