Some of the world’s largest glass, mining, packaging and automotive companies have joined forces to launch Responsible Glass, a new global certification initiative designed to cut emissions and bring long-overdue sustainability standards to the glass sector.
Glass production generates around 95 million tonnes of CO₂ each year, yet the industry has lacked a unified framework for responsible sourcing and manufacturing.
Responsible Glass aims to change this by establishing transparent, auditable standards for low-carbon production, improving circularity, strengthening worker protections and creating a trusted certification mark for responsibly produced glass.
Backed by major global players—including Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo Cars, NSG Group, WE Soda, Belron and Ciner Glass—the membership collectively employs over 150,000 people and generates $90bn in revenue.
The initiative is led by Francis Sullivan, formerly of HSBC, and Alan Knight, who helped drive the rapid global expansion of Responsible Steel.
Francis Sullivan said: “Driving social and environmental change in the glass industry requires an approach which values industry knowledge, social and environmental expertise, openness, trust and a forum where decisions are not only transparent but also equitable.”
Alan Knight added: “Glass is a material that touches hundreds of industries… Only by engaging the entire value chain can we work collaboratively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address other critical sustainability challenges.”
Founding members span the entire supply chain, from flat glass and container manufacturers to soda ash producers and responsible mining organisations.
The initiative aims to accelerate decarbonisation, increase supply chain transparency and support global climate goals through consistent standards and industry-wide collaboration.
