From billing chaos to AI breakthroughs, TPIs are riding a wave of tech transformation — and those not paddling risk being left behind.

At the ELCC panel on growth and technology, four leading voices – Alan Fordham from SystemsLink, Phil Best of Optimum Energy, Jellyfish Energy’s Paul Brennan and Dave Sheldrake of Power – laid out how tech is becoming essential not just for efficiency, but survival.

Phil kicked off bluntly: “There’s a lot of pressure now on TPIs to deliver more than just price. It’s about data, reporting and automation.”

Alan agreed, adding it’s all about scaling smart: “Grow your customer base without growing your cost base.”

The key? Real-time platforms and automation.

The panel warned that industry change is moving fast – from market-wide half-hourly settlement to tougher regulation. Without the right tech stack, you won’t keep up.

But it’s not just about tech for tech’s sake.

The best TPIs are using automation and AI to free up time and unlock insights.

Phil said: “AI is coming, but it won’t take jobs – it’s about using the right people and the right tools.”

Alan broke it down simply: “Think RPA for repetitive tasks, large language models for customer support, and machine learning for smarter validation.”

Future-proofing came up time and again. Paul said aligning with suppliers who offer real-time pricing tech is a game changer: “Speed wins. If you get the price out first, you get the deal.”

Phil urged TPIs to fix their data foundations now or fall behind: “Some are still doing things manually – it’s not scalable.”

So, what separates the best from the rest?

A willingness to embrace change, invest in the right tools and – crucially – educate both staff and customers. Because in a market moving this fast, sitting still is not an option.
