China’s Geely is set to make its entry into the UK passenger car market as a standalone brand by establishing Geely Auto UK.
Following its “one country, one policy” strategy, Geely Auto UK said it will integrate dealers, suppliers, and partners to tailor operations to local market demands.
In 2024, Geely posted record sales of over 2.17 million vehicles globally – a 34% increase year-on-year – and grew exports by 53%. By the year-end, Geely aims to exceed 1,100 global outlets, with the UK being targeted as a strategic market.
The company manufactures and sells vehicles under the brands of Geely, Lynk & Co and Zeekr brands, which are all part of the Geely Auto Group business unit, along with its subsidiaries and joint ventures such as Volvo Cars, Polestar, Proton, Smart and Lotus, as well as commercial vehicles under the London EV Company, Radar Auto / Riddara and Farizon brands.
It also holds a 17% stake in Aston Martin and owns half of Horse Powertrain, an engine manufacturing joint venture with Renault
Geely’s initial UK launch vehicle will be the Geely EX5, an all-electric C-segment SUV designed to meet regulatory and consumer needs across 89 countries, including right-hand drive markets like the UK.
To ensure the EX5 meets the expectations of British drivers, Geely said it has conducted extensive customer clinics and development work.
Geely has also partnered with Lotus Engineering to conduct an independent, comprehensive chassis and dynamics assessment of the EX5 on UK roads which has provided feedback to fine-tune the vehicle’s performance.
Geely plans to launch sales channels in late summer, with retail sales expected to begin in Q4.
Mike Yang, general manager at Geely Auto UK, said: “The Geely EX5 offers features that will resonate with British customers. Partnering with Lotus Engineering ensures the vehicle meets local expectations, strengthening our commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible electrified vehicles in the UK market.”
An expanded line-up of Geely models is expected to launch in 2026.
