Great British Energy has set out its clean power five-year plan to build public stakes in the UK’s energy future and deliver industrial muscle at the same time.
The new strategy shows how a publicly owned developer can accelerate the shift to homegrown renewables and make sure the benefits land in communities not just balance sheets.
At the core is scale.
GBE wants at least 15GW of clean generation and storage by 2030 which is enough to power almost 10m homes.
The plan says that public investment will pull in £15bn of private finance over time through joint ventures long-term partnerships and local projects that anchor jobs where they are built.
More than 1,000 community and local energy schemes will get support as GBE Local ramps up the role of towns villages and public services in the energy system.
The aim is to make clean power something people build own and benefit from where they live not something done far away and sold back to them.

The jobs story is central. GBE says 10,000 roles will be supported through projects in areas long reliant on oil and gas with new work in grid services onshore wind solar and storage plus major offshore wind expansion.
Those jobs will sit alongside a growing supply chain backed by the £1bn Energy – Engineered in the UK programme which focuses on British manufacturing and long-term resilience.
GBE will act as a developer and equity investor so the public holds stakes in the assets built. Any returns flow back into more projects more capacity and more opportunity in a cycle designed to grow over decades not years.
CEO Dan McGrail put it plainly: “We are proud to be putting public ownership to work unlocking investment powering communities creating jobs and building an energy system that delivers for the UK.”
The plan focuses on three investment tracks.
GBE Local unleashes community energy. Onshore Energy strengthens grid stability with renewables and storage spread nationwide. Offshore Energy drives deep-water wind expansion and cements the UK’s global lead.
Ed Miliband says GBE will turn Britain’s natural resources into national advantage to build clean power at speed and put the gains back into the public’s hands.
