Driven by the rapid energy transition and influx of renewable sources, the European electricity market demands unprecedented data transparency. The ENTSO-E Transparency Platform serves as the central hub for this critical information, supporting everyone from regulators to the general public. Recognising that growing data volumes required a fundamental shift, Unicorn delivered a complete architectural overhaul to future-proof this vital European infrastructure.

Initial State

The original web-based platform reliably fulfilled its core purpose of making energy data accessible under European legislation. Over the years, however, incremental expansions turned the system into a complex monolith. It became clear that the legacy architecture was not equipped to handle the exponential growth in data volumes, users’ increasing expectations, or complex future challenges like second-level time resolution. Rather than simply applying another patch, ENTSO-E required a comprehensive transformation to ensure long-term sustainability.

New Solution

Unicorn was selected to execute a systematic rewrite, transitioning the platform into a unified, modern architecture. The new solution is powered by more than 40 independent microservices implemented in Java and Node.js, paired with a responsive single-page application built on HTML5 and React. This shift to a microservice architecture delivers significant benefits: it reduces latency, accelerates feature deployment, and ensures robust scalability for the future.

A major highlight of this delivery is the entirely redesigned graphical user interface. Designed with a strict focus on clarity and visual consistency, it allows users to effortlessly navigate massive data sets. Visitors can now easily compare statistics, interact with dynamic charts, and instantly grasp key electricity market indicators.

Delivery Process

Replacing a critical piece of European infrastructure requires absolute precision. To manage this massive complexity, Unicorn employed a highly structured, phased migration approach. By decoupling functionalities into logical units, the development team ensured a seamless transition.

The parallel operation of the legacy system and the newly built components guaranteed zero disruption for end-users. This careful orchestration meant that new data repositories and services were gradually integrated into the live environment without ever compromising daily data availability.

Project Results

Today, the revamped Transparency Platform provides open, reliable access to energy data, fully equipped to handle tomorrow’s regulatory and technological demands. The user-centric interface has fundamentally shifted the platform from a simple data repository into an active tool that supports informed decision-making across the continent.

For ENTSO-E, the new architecture represents a highly stable foundation. It can flexibly accommodate new European regulations, massive data expansions, and innovative functionalities without straining the system. Ultimately, this successful deployment underscores Unicorn’s capability to execute large-scale overhauls of critical digital infrastructure, delivering a platform that actively empowers the modern European energy market.
