New funding has been announced to support workers and attract low-carbon investment in Grangemouth, reinforcing efforts to secure a sustainable industrial future.

The Scottish Government will provide £41,000 to Unite the Union to deliver the Grangemouth Jobs Prioritisation Scheme, linking public investment to employment opportunities for affected workers.

The scheme ensures businesses receiving support through the Just Transition Fund prioritise local workers, helping retain skills critical to delivering a cleaner industrial cluster.

The announcement marks one year since Project Willow set out actions needed to safeguard Grangemouth’s future, with progress focused on decarbonisation and economic resilience.

Over the past year, £11.4m has been invested in projects including Celtic Renewables and MiAlgae, supporting low-carbon technologies and hundreds of jobs by 2029.

Further funding has supported skills development, with 316 people benefiting from joint Scottish and UK Government programmes aimed at enabling transition into green industries.

The combined investment is expected to create 279 direct jobs, strengthening the region’s role in Scotland’s energy transition while reducing industrial emissions.

Scotland’s Climate Action and Energy Secretary Gillian Martin said: “The Grangemouth Jobs Prioritisation Scheme – developed in partnership with Unite – is helping workers secure new opportunities and ensuring that their vital experience, skills and knowledge are not lost to Grangemouth or to Scotland. This is a just transition in action.”

Unite Scottish Secretary, Susan Fitzgerald said: “The Grangemouth jobs scheme was initiated by the workers at the refinery who were impacted by the devastating impact of its closure due to a failure to keep it open. Unite said we would leave no stone unturned in the fight to protect workers and communities.

“We have continued to work tirelessly which led to the establishment of the jobs scheme with Scottish government support.

“Workers who lost their jobs will be prioritised for new employment opportunities in the Grangemouth area as a condition for any company in receipt of public funds.”
