Door locks on vehicles have come a long way.

00:02.480 –> 00:06.920

About 100 years ago, many cars didn’t have

roofs, which meant locking the doors was

00:06.920 –> 00:10.359

pointless.

Since then, keyed entry has evolved from two

00:10.359 –> 00:15.720

key systems for locks and ignitions, to remote

keyless features becoming fairly standard.

00:16.149 –> 00:18.139

But there are still some kinks to work out.

00:18.350 –> 00:24.309

Ask Ford, which recently issued a stop sale

order for its Mustang Mack E electric vehicles

00:24.309 –> 00:27.979

due to a significant issue with the vehicle’s

door locking system.

00:28.299 –> 00:32.709

According to the Detroit News, which obtained a

copy of the safety recall notice sent to

00:32.709 –> 00:38.229

dealerships, more than 3000 vehicles with the

model years between 2021 and 20.

00:38.362 –> 00:44.502

25 are susceptible to an issue that could

either lock owners out or trap them inside of

00:44.502 –> 00:47.662

their vehicles.

As the report points out, the problem can be

00:47.662 –> 00:52.893

traced back to the vehicle’s 12 volt batteries,

which could unexpectedly discharge.

00:53.162 –> 00:58.173

If that happens, the front door electronic

latches could get stuck on their previous lock

00:58.173 –> 00:59.652

or unlock status.

01:00.022 –> 01:02.645

That would be a.

hassle in the best case scenario,

01:02.855 –> 01:07.856

but it could also present a potentially life

threatening problem if a child or pet was

01:07.856 –> 01:12.816

locked inside, especially as summer rolls in

for the northern hemisphere and temperatures

01:12.816 –> 01:15.776

climb.

A Ford spokesperson told the Detroit News that

01:15.776 –> 01:19.255

a software update to address the issue is

coming soon.

01:19.456 –> 01:22.846

Ford earlier this year issued another recall

related to the Mustang.

01:23.220 –> 01:28.930

The automaker was forced to follow up on a

previous recall with another recall to ensure

01:28.930 –> 01:33.720

it properly dealt with an issue where

unintended steering assist could cause the

01:33.720 –> 01:40.360

steering wheel to begin oscillating at random.

Ford sold nearly 2.1 million vehicles in 2024.

01:40.610 –> 01:45.489

The traditional Mustang and Mach E accounted

for nearly 100,000 of that total.

01:45.690 –> 01:47.809

I’m Ben Munson, and this is manufacturing now.
