You could soon be driving on roads marked in the greenest way possible!
WJ Group has launched what it says, is the world’s first fully electric thermoplastic road marking truck, a major step towards decarbonising the highways industry.
Revealed at the LCRIG Innovation Festival, the new vehicle represents a £500,000 investment and is designed to complete a full shift on a single charge.
It supports the company’s target to achieve net zero scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2032.
The truck will help deliver zero-emission road marking services using WJ’s low carbon thermoplastic products, responding to growing demand from highway authorities seeking greener solutions.
Designed by WJ’s internal team and built at its Elland and Newcastle-under-Lyme depots, the truck is based on an Iveco chassis and modified with lightweight aluminium components. Electric vehicle specialists Electra Commercial Vehicles helped develop the bespoke glider chassis.
To replace gas burners, WJ designed an electric heating system to heat the thermoplastic material and created electric applicator prams to maintain temperature during installation. The vehicle is now in its final development phase ahead of deployment.
Wayne Johnston, CEO of WJ Group, said: “By launching the world’s first fully electric thermoplastic road marking truck, we are offering a completely new and innovative solution to help our industry partners keep sustainability at the heart of their decisions.”
He added: “Our EV Truck is the first step towards a fully electric fleet – eliminating the need for fossil fuel powered equipment. I’m proud that we are leading the industry towards a cleaner, brighter tomorrow.”
