Electric vehicles (EVs) are now nearly 30% cheaper to service over five years compared to their petrol, diesel or hybrid counterparts, according to new data published by The Car Expert, in partnership with analytics provider Clear Vehicle Data.
The analysis, covering more than 600 models currently on sale in the UK, found that EVs were cheaper to service in 95% of like-for-like model comparisons, with drivers saving hundreds of pounds annually.
Despite a general rise in servicing costs across the industry, the study shows an EV’s simpler drivetrains eliminate the need for many routine maintenance items.
The total average saving after five years of ownership comes in at £1,687, with EV owners spending an average of £4,022 versus £5,709 for petrol, diesel or hybrid equivalents.
Stuart Masson, editorial director at The Car Expert, said: “While purchase price often dominates the EV conversation, servicing is a crucial – and frequently overlooked – aspect of car ownership. This latest data confirms that EVs offer real-world cost advantages long after the initial sale.”
Clear Vehicle Data’s figures also show standout examples:
- Vauxhall Corsa Electric: 31% cheaper to service in the first three years vs petrol model
- Fiat 500e: 34% lower servicing costs in early ownership
- Mini Countryman Electric: 18% cheaper over the first three years, 22% from years three to five
The findings feed directly into The Car Expert’s Expert Rating Index, providing UK consumers and fleet buyers with transparent comparisons of ownership costs across a wide range of vehicles and configurations.
