UK Power Networks has completed a £15.6 million upgrade at the Nelson Street substation in East London, doubling capacity and strengthening electricity resilience for homes and businesses in East Ham and Barking.

Delivered with engineering partner Clancy, the project installed and commissioned three new 132kV 54‑ton transformers alongside a new 11kV switchboard, replacing legacy equipment and increasing the site’s firm capacity to meet rising demand.

Launched in 2020 and now energised, the scheme is a key milestone in UK Power Networks’ investment in a smarter, more reliable local grid.

Awaise Umar, project manager at UK Power Networks, said: “By integrating state-of-the-art equipment and increasing the site’s firm capacity, we are not only addressing current demands but also future-proofing our infrastructure to support the region’s growth and sustainability goals.”

The upgraded substation will support thousands of customers as electrification of heat and transport accelerates, enabling low carbon technologies to connect while improving network reliability during peak demand.
