Germany’s largest distribution grid operator E.ON has completed the rollout of a digital twin across all its distribution system operators, covering over 700,000 kilometres of grid.

Built using a central data platform powered by smart grid software from envelio, the project virtually maps more than one-third of Germany’s distribution grid.

The digital twin evaluates data from over 55 million network components and 180,000 measuring devices, supporting grid planning, connection and operation.

It enables near-instant processing of grid connection requests for wind turbines, solar PV systems, heat pumps and EV chargers. In 2024 alone, the E.ON network handled more than 410,000 such requests.

Victoria Ossadnik, E.ON Board Member for Digital & Innovation, said: “Our answer to the growing complexity of the energy system is digitization. The development and introduction of new IT technologies such as envelio’s digital twin requires innovative strength and the will to transform.”

The technology identifies where urgent low-voltage grid expansion is needed, highlights areas with sufficient capacity and supports flexibility planning.

With over half of Germany’s renewable energy connected to E.ON’s grid, the digital twin enhances supply security and accelerates the energy transition.

E.ON’s Board Member for Grids Thomas König added: “Digitization is the key to a high level of security of supply and stability of our power grids.”

The digital twin is already in use in E.ON’s grids in Sweden, the Czech Republic and Poland. In total, more than 70 European grid operators are using envelio’s Intelligent Grid Platform.
