OVO Energy’s Director of Electric Vehicles, Alex Thwaites, urged drivers not to let myths hold them back from going electric, as the government’s new Electric Car Grant makes EVs more affordable.

September is traditionally one of the busiest months for new car sales and with grants worth up to £3,750 on models priced under £37,000, more drivers are now considering the switch.

According to OVO research, half of Brits (49%) want their next car to be electric, with three in five (61%) saying they are more likely to opt for an EV than five years ago.

However, concerns remain.

Battery range anxiety (49%), charging infrastructure (43%) and high upfront costs (42%) top the list of barriers.

Mr Thwaites said that clear guidance can help drivers overcome these worries, sharing his top advice for first-time buyers.

He said: “I can honestly say that my EV is the best car I’ve owned to date. EVs and charging infrastructure have come a long way and grants, tax breaks and a booming second-hand market are making EVs even more affordable.”

His six key tips include test driving different models, checking if a home charger can be installed, securing the right energy tariff, making use of apps for easier public charging and avoiding common misconceptions.

He also stressed making full use of the Electric Car Grant.
