Forget the bad press, the posh green fruits of the middle classes are actually good for the planet!

Avocados are gaining global popularity not just for their health benefits but now also for their environmental credentials. Despite claims they are water-intensive and farming them leads to deforestation and habitat loss, new research shows avocados are far more sustainable than often portrayed.

The World Avocado Organisation (WAO) highlights that avocados require significantly less water than beef, chocolate and coffee, while emitting 25 times fewer greenhouse gases than beef.

Their carbon footprint, around 2.4 kg of CO2 per kilogram, is comparable to fruits like plums and raspberries.

Zac Bard, WAO Chairman said:

Avocados are more frequently used as scapegoats in the debate around carbon footprint in the foods we consume but as the data clearly tells us, they are not the bad guys and this needs to stop.”

Avocados often grow in regions with high rainfall, reducing reliance on irrigation. When water management is required, sustainable drip irrigation ensures efficiency.

Additionally, mature avocado trees help capture around 22 kg of CO2 per year, aiding carbon sequestration.

Avocado farming also plays a vital role in supporting communities in countries like Peru, Kenya and South Africa. Farms provide employment and fair wages for thousands of workers, contributing to economic growth in developing regions.

“Adding avocados to your diet is a delicious and versatile way to nourish your body and support long-term wellness,” says nutritionist Kerry Torrens.

With efficient water use, low emissions and social benefits, avocados are proving to be both a healthy and environmentally conscious choice for consumers seeking sustainable food options.

So don’t feel guilty when you slice yours!
