The name Diageo may not be so easily

recognizable, but its brands certainly are.

00:05.179 –> 00:10.729

This European spirits company is reportedly

responsible for distilling 40% of all Scotch

00:10.729 –> 00:14.529

whiskey via well-known names like Johnnie

Walker and J&B,

00:14.649 –> 00:19.250

but it’s Diageo’s Crown Royal whiskey brand

that’s drawn the ire of our neighbors to the

00:19.250 –> 00:23.659

north after a recent business decision

impacting a plant in Amherstburg,

00:23.850 –> 00:27.180

a town on the Detroit River border with the US.

This week,

00:27.250 –> 00:32.250

Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded angrily to

reports that the spirits company

00:32.584 –> 00:35.974

would be closing the Amherstburg Crown Royal

bottling plant,

00:36.224 –> 00:38.735

killing 180 jobs in the process.

00:38.944 –> 00:43.095

Ford recently declared that he had a message to

the company’s CEO in France,

00:43.424 –> 00:49.264

quote, You hurt my people, I’m going to hurt

you, adding that Diageo leaders were quote dumb

00:49.264 –> 00:50.895

as a bag of hammers.

00:51.104 –> 00:55.744

As further evidence of Ford’s outrage,

bystanders then watched the Ontario leader dump

00:55.744 –> 00:59.375

a full bottle of Crown Royal whiskey onto the

ground in protest.

00:59.799 –> 01:03.869

He said he encouraged others to do the same

thing and to start supporting companies that

01:03.869 –> 01:05.620

make whiskey here in Ontario.

01:05.870 –> 01:11.190

Reports suggest Ford views the plant closure as

a casualty in Canada’s ongoing trade spat with

01:11.190 –> 01:15.099

the United States, a characterization that

Diageo denies,

01:15.349 –> 01:19.550

saying the decision was made well before tariff

determinations were made and has nothing to do

01:19.550 –> 01:22.680

with them.

Instead, the company contends that the move was

01:22.680 –> 01:27.440

part of an effort to streamline its North

American supply chain and also move closer to

01:27.440 –> 01:30.800

US consumers.

And while Ford appears to call on Canadian

01:30.800 –> 01:35.550

consumers to boycott the brand, a report in the

Toronto Sun pointed out that this approach

01:35.550 –> 01:37.470

might not be such a great plan.

01:37.760 –> 01:42.830

Crown Royal, they noted, is only made in Canada,

where the brand employs 500 workers,

01:43.000 –> 01:44.639

not to mention the company buys millions.

01:44.889 –> 01:49.209

Dollars of the country’s corn, rye and barley

in order to produce it.

01:49.419 –> 01:52.569

Despite this, Ford continues to play hardball.

01:52.779 –> 01:58.059

The Sun reported that as of Tuesday, his staff

claimed that unless Diageo reversed this

01:58.059 –> 02:02.620

decision, Ford might delist the company’s other

products, taking them off the shelves in the

02:02.620 –> 02:07.300

province, much like he did with American

products earlier this year when related US

02:07.300 –> 02:09.149

tariffs were first applied.

02:09.380 –> 02:11.539

This is Manufacturing Now.
