00:00.119 –> 00:04.250

Last month, more than 3,200 union workers at

three Boeing plants in the St.

00:04.400 –> 00:06.429

Louis area went on strike.

00:06.719 –> 00:13.109

The employees who make U.S. fighter jets and

advanced weapons systems rejected a landmark

00:13.109 –> 00:16.639

contract.

The deal reportedly gave workers a 40% bump

00:16.639 –> 00:19.559

over the next four years, as well as better

medical benefits,

00:19.639 –> 00:22.469

pensions, overtime, and work-life balance.

00:22.760 –> 00:25.500

But the union’s members rejected that proposal.

00:26.100 –> 00:30.569

Well, it’s been a month and since Boeing’s best

aren’t willing to budge,

00:30.819 –> 00:35.259

the company is looking for a plan B.

Yesterday, the New York Times reported that the

00:35.259 –> 00:39.029

new plan includes hiring permanent replacement

workers.

00:39.590 –> 00:43.939

Boeing Vice President Dan Gillian says talks

with the International Association of

00:43.939 –> 00:48.729

Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 837

have made little progress.

00:49.060 –> 00:50.970

Not only are they not getting

closer to terms,

00:51.049 –> 00:57.090

but rather they’re drifting further apart as

the union issues demands for more of everything.

00:57.520 –> 01:01.930

Gillian says they also aren’t specific about

what it will take to end the strike after

01:01.930 –> 01:06.360

rejecting a proposal that was called a landmark

agreement.

01:06.650 –> 01:10.400

So Boeing is moving forward with its

contingency plan,

01:10.529 –> 01:14.129

which includes adding permanent replacement

staff for manufacturing roles.

01:14.440 –> 01:19.419

Bloomberg reports that the planemaker is

scheduled to hold a job fair later this month.

01:19.629 –> 01:24.220

The plants are still operational at a limited

capacity as the company has shifted some

01:24.220 –> 01:25.300

positions around.

01:25.510 –> 01:30.669

While some products are still making it out the

door, Boeing needs to find a swift resolution

01:30.669 –> 01:35.279

as its defense unit accounted for more than a

third of the company’s total revenue,

01:35.669 –> 01:39.379

some $23 billion last year.

01:39.599 –> 01:42.139

I’m David Manti.

This is Manufacturing Now.
