Plans for the Bath Road Energy Centre have been approved by Bristol City Council, unlocking a major expansion of low-carbon heating in the city. The all-electric facility will become the largest district heating energy centre in Bristol.
The 13MW centre will serve the Temple heat network area and provide heating and hot water for more than 7,000 homes and businesses.
Carbon emissions are expected to fall by up to 65%, compared with a gas boiler.
The project forms part of Bristol City Leap, a 20-year partnership between the council, Ameresco and Vattenfall. The partnership supports the city’s ambition to become carbon neutral and climate resilient.
Located beside Bristol Temple Meads, the energy centre will act as the engine room for the Temple Quarter regeneration area. It will use air source heat pumps and electric boilers, working alongside existing low-carbon infrastructure.
The network already connects to the University of Bristol, capturing waste heat from computer servers to warm future buildings.
