Autotech Training has partnered with Topdon UK to deliver IMI-accredited Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) on-site training directly to garages and workshops without the need for businesses to invest in or own ADAS equipment.
Topdon’s Phoenix Mobile ADAS units allow technicians to train at their own premises, eliminating the traditional requirement to travel to dedicated training centres or invest in costly calibration infrastructure.
ADAS technology – featuring innovations like lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and autonomous emergency braking – has become standard in most new vehicles. Yet the rapid rollout of such systems has left much of the independent aftermarket scrambling to keep pace with servicing and calibration demands.
“There’s a growing gap in ADAS knowledge across the aftermarket, and it’s critical that we close it,” said Alistair McCrindle, operations director at Autotech Training. “Technicians need the right skills to ensure these systems are calibrated correctly. Otherwise, the equipment investments many garages are making risk becoming redundant.”
Until now, Autotech Training could only deliver its ADAS courses at its Milton Keynes HQ or to garages with their own calibration rigs. The new partnership removes that barrier entirely, giving workshops nationwide direct access to IMI Levels 2 and 3 training, and accreditation.
The shift is particularly important for independent garages, many of which specialise in accident repair, windscreen replacement, or general maintenance – all areas where ADAS calibration is fast becoming a standard requirement.
The mobile training model also empowers garages to educate customers on the value of recalibration.
Research by Which? found that 54% of UK drivers have disabled their vehicle’s ADAS features, describing them as confusing or intrusive and in some cases, customers are even signing disclaimers to avoid paying for recalibration after repairs.
“Our training not only enables technicians to deliver this service,” McCrindle added, “but also equips them to educate customers on why it matters.”
In line with this growing need, Topdon has reported a 50% surge in enquiries for its ADAS equipment in the past three months alone.
“The partnership marks a significant step forward,” said Jack Davis, national sales director at Topdon. “By empowering technicians with the right skills, it ensures that garages and workshops across the UK can not only meet current repair standards but also play an active role in improving road safety for everyone.”
