Auto Trader is to introduce a new sustainability rating system to its editorial car reviews this autumn, as part of a wider initiative to help consumers make more environmentally conscious vehicle choices.

The new sustainability assessment, revealed during the company’s recent Drivers’ Choice Awards in London, will sit alongside existing editorial scores covering running costs, reliability, safety, features, comfort and performance.

Each vehicle reviewed will be eligible for up to five stars – three reflecting the sustainability credentials of the specific model, and two assessing the manufacturer’s wider environmental performance.

Brand-level ratings will incorporate independent data sources, including the World Benchmarking Alliance’s automotive and transportation manufacturers benchmark, which evaluates manufacturers on areas such as electrification progress, supply chain transparency, workforce practices, and investment in low-carbon innovation.

Auto Trader will also align the presentation of its new ratings with the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s Green Claims Code, ensuring that all sustainability claims are clear, evidence-based and free of greenwashing.

Speaking at the launch, Auto Trader editorial director Erin Baker said: “Our scheme aims to be data-driven, transparent, fair and honest, whilst rooted in editorial expertise at both brand and model levels based on AutoTrader’s decades-long working relationships with car brands.”

She added: “The new ratings will help car owners better understand the carbon footprint of these vehicles over the duration of ownership, as well as arming them with unique insights about how sustainable the supply chain is, including raw materials, so they can make an informed decision on their next car purchase with sustainability in mind.”
