Apple has announced a major environmental milestone for Earth Day: a 60% reduction in its global greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2015 levels.

The achievement is a significant step towards Apple’s goal to become carbon neutral across its entire footprint by 2030.

“We’re incredibly proud of the progress we’re making toward Apple 2030, which touches every part of our business,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. “As we get closer to 2030, the work gets even harder — and we’re meeting the challenge with innovation, collaboration, and urgency.”

Highlights from Apple’s 2024 Environmental Progress Report include 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity now in its global supply chain, helping to avoid 21.8 million metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions in the last year alone.

The company also achieved 99% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 99% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries.

In manufacturing, 26 direct semiconductor suppliers and all display suppliers have committed to abating at least 90% of fluorinated greenhouse gases by 2030.

Additionally, Apple and its suppliers have now saved over 90 billion gallons of freshwater through its Supplier Clean Water Program.

The tech giant also continues to innovate at the product level: the latest MacBook Air features more than 55% recycled content, the highest in any Apple product.

As part of its Earth Day celebration, Apple is promoting recycling, launching exclusive Apple Watch badges and offering themed content across its platforms.
