The risks to birds flying over European wndfarms could be reduced thanks to AI.
Boulder Imaging has partnered with Croatian environmental consultancy Oikon Ltd. to deploy AI-powered IdentiFlight technology at wind farms across Southeast Europe, helping protect bird species.
As Croatia expands wind power under the European Green Deal, new regulations require detailed environmental impact assessments, particularly near Natura 2000 sites.
IdentiFlight’s system uses real-time bird detection and automated turbine curtailment to reduce risks to high-concern species, including Eurasian griffons, honey buzzards, golden eagles and kestrels.
Dalibor Hatić, general manager of Oikon Ltd., said: “IdentiFlight is a proven solution that aligns with our mission to harmonise development with nature conservation. We’re excited to bring this cutting-edge technology to Croatia and Southeast Europe, where biodiversity protection is critical.”
More than 520 IdentiFlight systems have been deployed globally, reducing bird fatalities by 85% while limiting power generation losses to under 1%.
Initial deployments in Croatia are set for 2026, focusing on key migratory routes and ecologically sensitive areas.
