Ofgem has opened up an investigation into whether ScottishPower Energy Retail complied with rules on treating customers fairly and supporting vulnerable households, reports Reuters.

The probe will examine whether the adequate support was provided and if the company complied with the rules that prohibit energy companies from back-billing customers for energy consumed more than 12 months earlier.

The investigation will also assess whether ScottishPower took into account customer’s abilities to pay when setting debt repayment plans.

It will also cover the supplier’s electricity and gas retail operations during the period under investigation.

A ScottishPower spokesperson said: “ScottishPower confirms that it is working with Ofgem in relation to its customer service obligations.”

Ofgem has said opening the investigation did not imply that it had reached any findings about non-compliance.
