Octopus and UNISON have signed a recognition agreement which means that the energy company is now supported by the UK’s largest trade union.

The organisations describe the deal as a “natural fit” as both want cheaper, greener energy, not more fossil fuels.

Jon J. Paull, Chief Operating Officer at Octopus, said: “We spoke to several unions over recent months and kept coming back to UNISON. We share the same goal: a clean energy future that brings bills down and creates good green jobs across the country – from office to field teams.”

The agreement sets out how both organisations plan to work together for the benefit of the employees.

Octopus has already been named one of the best places to work in the UK by the Financial Times, The Sunday Times and Fortune, with all employees being shareholders in the company.

Andrea Egan, General Secretary of UNISON, said: “Climate change threatens us all, but it also presents an opportunity to create millions of good, unionised green jobs. That’s why we’re delighted to announce this deal with Octopus. It’s good news for the company’s workers and for the future of green jobs in this country.”

The energy company has created more than 12,000 green jobs in under ten-years, with around 8,000 of those in the UK.
