Geothermal needs more government backing

The government are being called upon to provide more backing for the national delivery of geothermal energy.

The National Geothermal Centre (NGC) has set out three immediate asks for Labour and  further 16 recommendations on how the UK geothermal could deliver 10GW of heat and 1.5GW of electricity.

The three immediate asks include recognising and rescoring the NGC to lead coordination, commissioning a costed exploration risk pilot and create demand by assessing the energy source for suitable heat network and public estate projects.

The NGC’s roadmap finds the main barrier to growth is that geothermal projects can carry high upfront drilling costs and geological risk at the first well, followed by low running costs once operational.

Investors also face uncertain long-term revenues and limited risk-sharing and licensing mechanisms.

Dr Charlotte Adams, CEO of the National Geothermal Centre, said: “Beneath our feet sits a source of heat and power that no other country can switch off, available day and night. Geothermal offers secure, home-grown energy and this roadmap shows government exactly how to deliver it at scale.”

The roadmap also claims that better backing could support up to 50,000 direct and 125,000 indirect jobs.
