Australia has become the first country to endorse a global plan to double the number of homes with rooftop solar by 2030.

The Hon Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy and President of Negotiations for COP31, has endorsed the Global Rooftop Solar Declaration backing the scheme aiming to help families access affordable finance, upgrade power grids and train more local workers.

Australia already holds a high percentage of solar on household roofs, with solar on more than 40% of homes and rooftop systems supplying around an eighth of the country’s electricity. In Australia, a household can save up to AU$1,500 (£789) a year from solar alone

The declaration sets out six steps to make 300 million solar homes a reality. This includes simplifying rooftop solar deployment, placing households at the centre of energy policy, unlocking affordable finance, modernising grids and expanding storage.

The Global Solar Council is urging more countries to follow suit, hoping to make rooftop solar ambition a priority for governments before COP31 in November.
