The government has unveiled wide ranging sanctions on Russian oil companies and tankers.
The penalties target individuals and entities which produce or transport Russian oil, which funds the country’s wartime economy.
Anybody or organisation that facilitates the production or global trade of items used in support of Russia’s ballistic missile capabilities and fuel their miliary base will also be hit with sanctions.
The oil companies that have been sanctioned are Zarubezhneft and INK Capital, meaning that the UK’s efforts now cover 90% of Russia’s total oil production capacity.
A further 12 oil tankers operating as part of the country’s shadow fleet have been penalised, bringing the total number sanctioned to over 600.
The government said: “The message is simple: if you help Russia fund or equip this war, you will face the consequences.”
Labour says they are also “clamping down” on those helping the country evade sanctions through crypto exchanges and financial services.
