The UK now has its first ever manufacturing facility for synthetic natural gas (SNG) systems at over 60,000 sqft – the first of its kind in the world and one of the largest new manufacturing facilities to open in London for over 20 years.

The UK currently has a large reliance on imported fossil gas, with imports meeting around 67% of gas demand in 2025. Rivan Industries, the company behind the facility, is the only company in the world at this stage of developing an SNG system that can compete with fossil gas.

Rivan designs and manufactures a 1MW modular SNG system that is fully integrated as it takes in electricity from off-grid solar assets and turns it into H2 and CO2, before feeding into a reactor that produces SNG.

When the facility is fully operational, it will run semi-automated and build up to 50 systems a year, which will then be deployed at sites across the UK to produce SNG.

The new development will also facilitate more than 100 roles over the next 12 months, working towards the company’s aim of bringing up to 1TWh of SNG online in the next three years.
