A new 368MW solar farm has been inaugurated in Spain’s Murcia region following a €335m (£286m) investment, with the project expected to generate enough electricity to power around 196,000 homes each year.
Lorca Solar, developed by photovoltaic and energy storage company X-ELIO, is located in the municipality of Lorca and is expected to produce approximately 683,374MWh of clean electricity annually.
More than 2,100 people worked on the construction of the facility, including around 600 workers from municipalities neighbouring the site. More than 80 local SMEs also supported the project.
Alongside electricity generation, X-ELIO said more than half of the project’s 760-hectare site has been allocated to environmental measures.
Around 400 hectares will be used for habitat restoration, biodiversity initiatives and the continuation of traditional land uses. Measures include managing agricultural plots for steppe birds and birds of prey, introducing sheep grazing to manage vegetation and reduce wildfire risk, and installing shelters and breeding areas for wildlife.
The company has also established a Sustainable Communities and Nature Plan, which includes training for local residents in photovoltaic installation and occupational risk prevention.
