Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh has announced that the government will devolve the Warm Homes Plan so that Mayors, local governments and communities will be able to invest money that is usually organised by Whitehall.
Ms Fahnbulleh outlined how the new Great Home Upgrade programme will deliver in communities.
She said: “To upgrade millions of homes. To renew estates. To train up young people for skilled jobs. To boost local businesses and their supply chain. To lift up their community. This will be the Great Home Upgrade. Postcode-by-postcode. Street-by-street, community-by-community.”
During her speech at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, the Energy Secretary also emphasised that to solve high bills and climate change “more clean, home grown energy” is needed.
Ms Fahnbulleh also said that “climate change is here” and expressed her disappointment towards MPs who challenge the government’s net zero goals. Including Deputy Leader of Reform UK, Richard Tice and his comments regarding the summer heatwave.
She said: “When Richard Tice says forget net stupid zero. Let’s simply ‘enjoy the heat’. I say, tell that to the families whose homes have been threatened by fire. Tell that to the firefighters working through unbearable heat. Tell that to the parents wondering what kind of country our children will inherit.”
The Energy Secretary also criticised the words of Tory leader Kemi Badenoch who claimed that the UK should “abandon” climate goals. In response to this, Ms Fahnbulleh says she believes “we have a duty to protect our communities”.
