All eyes are on New York’s Climate Week, where Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh has raised her concerns for the current conversation surrounding the term ‘net zero’.
The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee have recently published a report that ultimately calls for a reduction in the use of the term ‘net zero’ as many believe it to be misleading.
In response to this, Ms Fahnbulleh said: “It’s a genuine tragedy that in a time when we can see and feel that climate change is here, the consensus that we had for a very long time in the UK around climate action is breaking down and people are trying to play politics with ‘net zero.”
The Energy Secretary claims she is unbothered by terminology and is focused on what changes she can make towards 2030 targets.
Ms Fahnbulleh went on to convey how pleased she is with the current progress towards the UK’s targets and says she is determined to ensure the progress will also lower bills.
She said: “I’m incredibility proud of the progress that has been made, more progress needs to be made because ultimately I’m really clear that unless we have clean power driving the system more often, we’re not going to get that impact in terms of bills.”
The Peckham MP touched on how people across the UK are struggling with energy costs despite the grid still needing upgrades.
She said: “Yes we need to invest in our networks but we are asking consumers to do that investment and pay the cost of that at a time when people are under press and that is a big ask.
“I think we designed it really well to deliver on the security of supply. I’m not sure we’ve given the same attention to affordability.”
Ms Fahnbulleh closed her statement by describing her determination to “get bills down” in her time as Energy Secretary.
