More than £46 billion of investment has been announced for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire over the next decade – energy is a major part of that investment.

Details of the investment pipeline were unveiled on Thursday 17th, marking the publication of the eighth edition of the Aberdeen City Region Investment Tracker by AGCC, Balmoral Group and Invest Aberdeen.

With the investment directed towards the granite city and spilling into the North Sea, energy is naturally a major part of the investment. Some of the biggest projects which will receive funding include £8.6bn towards the SSEN Transmission programme, £4.4bn towards Ossian floating offshore wind farm and interestingly, £1.6bn towards the unconfirmed Jackdaw gas project.

The SSEN Transmission programme alone is expected to support 2,700 local jobs and generate around £1.6bn of spending with businesses in Aberdeenshire, while the £6bn proposed AI data centre campus at Blackdog could make the region an international centre for AI infrastructure – despite recently tightened data centre rules for Scotland.

Kevin Binnie, corporate director at Balmoral Group, which supported the publication of the Investment Tracker, said: “With more than £46 billion in the pipeline, there is a tremendous opportunity to grow businesses, create jobs and deliver a lasting positive impact for the communities around us.”

The oil and gas powerhouse of the UK is transitioning towards investment in the future – perhaps the biggest U-turn we have ever seen from the country, positioning itself as a major UK energy and infrastructure hub, with billions going into electricity networks, offshore wind, hydrogen, carbon capture and gas alongside emerging sectors like AI.
