Fastest-selling used cars in September 2026 revealed

The MG HS is September’s fastest-selling used car, leaving dealer forecourts in an average of 16 days, according to Autotrader.

Hatchbacks and compact and mid-size SUVs dominate the latest rankings as buyers focus on practical and affordable everyday models.

Used cars are taking an average of 29 days to sell so far in September, one day faster than in August and in line with the same period last year.

The nearly new petrol hybrid MG HS leads the rankings, followed by the Toyota Yaris, Kia Sportage, Kia Niro and Hyundai Bayon, which are all averaging 19 days.

Asian brands occupy eight of the top 10 positions

Asian manufacturers account for eight of September’s 10 fastest-selling used cars, with models from MG, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Honda and Suzuki featuring in the rankings.

Although SUVs occupy six positions, most are compact or mid-size models intended for everyday family use. No large premium SUVs appear among the fastest-selling cars.

Hybrids and electric cars account for seven of the top 10 positions. Three-to-five-year-old electric cars are taking an average of 25 days to sell, four days faster than the wider used car market.

Across all age groups, petrol, full and mild hybrid and electric vehicles are tied as the fastest-selling fuel types, each averaging 28 days.

At the other end of the rankings, older diesel and some premium internal combustion engine cars are taking the longest to sell.

A diesel BMW 3 Series aged between 10 and 15 years is September’s slowest-selling used car, taking more than three times as long as the MG HS to leave dealer forecourts.

Five-to-10-year-old diesel Range Rover Sports are averaging 41 days, while similarly aged Tesla Model 3 electric cars are taking 37 days.

Marc Palmer, head of insights at Auto Trader, said: “The used car market is carrying good momentum into autumn, with healthy buyer demand reflected in the increased speed of stock turn.”

He highlighted particularly strong demand for practical everyday cars, with hatchbacks and smaller SUVs featuring prominently among September’s fastest sellers.

Palmer said the market was moving quickly but unevenly, making it important for dealers to match their stock to live buyer demand.

He added: “The biggest opportunities are likely to come from stocking the vehicles that match live buyer demand, pricing them competitively, and using real-time data to identify where they can turn stock quickly while still protecting margin.”
