Sizewell C has had its first commercial freight train delivery via the new Green Rail Route (GRR).
The train came into the site’s temporary Construction Area (TCA) in the early hours of Tuesday morning, carrying materials needed to build the new nuclear power station on the Suffolk coast.
Up to four freight trains will run per day at peak capacity with an initial two overnight services delivering construction materials to the site.
Damian Leydon, Site Delivery Director of Sizewell C, said: “The arrival of our first commercial freight train is a major milestone for Sizewell C and a significant step forward in how we build the project. The Green Rail Route is the result of years of planning, engineering, and collaboration with key partners.”
By using rail routes to transport goods to Sizewell C, the project avoids the use of around 50 HGVs from travelling on local roads.
Overall, the programme is expected to deliver 60% of materials by rail and sea in a bid to reduce the impacts on local communities.
