A new battery storage project has begun commercial operations in Rochdale with enough capacity to supply electricity for around 35,000 homes per day.
The 35MW/70MWh facility, developed by Masdar, stores electricity and releases it when demand rises, helping balance the local and wider electricity network.
The project can respond to changes in supply and demand within milliseconds, providing flexibility as more renewable power comes onto the grid.
It is the second battery storage facility brought into operation by Masdar in the UK, following a project in nearby Stockport that began operating last December.
The Rochdale development forms part of a wider expansion of battery storage across the UK, with further projects planned in Chesterfield and Cardiff.
Battery storage is increasingly being used to manage periods when renewable generation is high or demand changes rapidly, helping make better use of electricity generated by wind and solar.
