Flintshire County Council has granted planning permission for a carbon dioxide capture and liquefaction facility which will be one of the largest waste-to-energy projects Europe.
The Deeside Anaerobic Digestion Clean Energy Plant will process biomethane produced through the digestion of landfill waste, separating and purifying carbon dioxide before compressing it into liquid for storage and transport.
Once operational, it is expected to generate around 41,182 cubic metres of biogas and 16,000 tonnes of CO2 each year. One 24-tonne container of liquid CO2 is expected to leave the facility each day, increasing to a maximum of three containers daily.
The Liquid CO2 will be used in applications including refrigeration and arc welding.
The wider waste-to-energy project represents an investment of £282 million and aims to reduce residual waste sent to landfill to 10%, while increasing recycling to around 85%.
Planning officers said the project could provide environmental benefits and Natural Resources Wales raised no objections concerning potential impacts on the River Dee Special Area of Conservation.
