The military accommodation at RAF Mawgan in Cornwall has undergone a renovation to improve its sustainability and efficiency. The building now operates with a net zero carbon footprint.
The completed refurbishment has reduced the Baker Block’s Energy Use Intensity (EUI) from around 150 kWh/m² to 33.2 kWh/m², exceeding the target of 35 kWh/m².
Two years ago, the facilities faced a shortage of single living accommodation (SLA) and the 50-year-old Baker Block no longer met the performance standards needed to support the government’s energy efficiency ambitions.
Kris Hastings, Operations Director at VIVO Defence Services, said: “This project shows what’s possible when we rethink how we invest in the Defence estate.
“Rather than replacing existing buildings, we’ve demonstrated that refurbishment can deliver high-quality accommodation more quickly, more sustainably, and at significantly lower cost.”
In 12 months, the accommodation was refurbished into a modern, energy-efficient living space at a cost of approximately 30% of a typical new-build solution.
The sustainable additions included comprised solar PV, solar thermal and air-source heat pump installations. Major improvements were also made to the fabrics including 300mm insulation, triple-glazed windows and heat recovery systems.
