Energy-From-Waste (EfW) could cut electricity connection times from a decade to just two years by using private wire connections.
The new grid connections could improve long-term price certainty for businesses across the country, according to research by Resource Recovery UK (RRUK).
More than 500MW of power is needed to support industries in the UK’s most off-grid areas to build on the 350MW of reliable power that is currently available.
Conventional grid connections can take seven to twelve years for larger projects.
EfW hope to roll out the first project in Avonmouth, Bristol, delivering 40MW of compute capacity, the new project comes as data centre construction is forecast to grow by four times by 2030.
Chair of RRUK, Mike Maudsley said: “Energy-from-Waste already generates reliable energy as a by-product of managing the UK’s non-recyclable waste.
“Private wire connections present a huge opportunity to go further, responding to the surge in demand for connections from data centres and other industries.
“EfW facilities can help local businesses get connected much faster, providing reliable power and long-term price certainty and crucially, making the most of existing infrastructure that’s already in place.”
EfW’s existing UK fleet provides 1.7GW of power to the electricity market.
The data centres will be co-located with several of the companies facilities across the UK, including in Greater London, Oxfordshire and Fife.
