ScottishPower has announced plans to repower the UK’s largest onshore windfarm, Whitelee, doubling its capacity to more than 1GW as the company reported strong half-year financial results.
ScottishPower said it has spent more than £1 billion across its supply chain during the first half of the year, with 76% awarded to UK-based companies. The investment forms part of its wider £24 billion plan through to 2028.
The proposed £1.5 billion redevelopment of Whitelee would reduce the number of turbines from 214 to 124 while increasing installed capacity from 533MW to more than 1GW. The repowered site would generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 650,000 homes.
The company said the project would help maintain renewable generation as older wind farms reach the end of their operational lives. Construction would be completed in three phases to keep the site accessible to visitors, with improvements also planned for the visitor centre.
ScottishPower also announced plans to introduce community ownership opportunities and expand its community benefit fund to more than £5 million annually, almost five times its current level.
Keith Anderson, ScottishPower CEO, said: “Around half of Britain’s onshore windfarms will reach the end of their operational lives in the next decade. Repowering these assets using existing infrastructure is the quickest way of maintaining and increasing energy generation and is a no-brainer for boosting UK energy security and jobs and supply chains.”
