Iberdrola has become the world’s first electricity company to achieve ISO 45003 certification, recognising its management of psychological health and safety in the workplace.

The certification was awarded following an independent evaluation by LRQA, an international certification, inspection and assurance body. It marks a significant milestone in the company’s approach to employee wellbeing by placing psychological and emotional health alongside physical health and safety.

ISO 45003 provides international guidelines for managing psychological health and safety at work. Designed to complement ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety management systems, it encourages organisations to create healthier working environments by addressing issues such as stress, workload, organisational culture and work-life balance.

The certification follows a global audit covering Iberdrola’s operations and involved collaboration across multiple business areas.

According to the company, it demonstrates that psychological health and safety are now embedded within a structured management system that has been independently assessed against international best practice.

The achievement comes as businesses around the world place increasing emphasis on supporting employees’ mental health.

Rather than focusing on reactive measures, ISO 45003 promotes a preventive and systematic approach to identifying and managing psychosocial risks in the workplace.

Iberdrola said the certification strengthens its position as a leader in responsible people management by integrating emotional wellbeing into its wider health and safety strategy.
