Great British Energy’s permanent headquarters is now taking shape in Aberdeen, with fit-out work beginning at Marischal Square.

The Government Property Agency said work started last Monday to prepare the office space for the new publicly-owned energy company, which was launched in May 2025 and backed with £8.3bn of government funding.

GBE has been created to help deliver Labour’s mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower, investing in energy projects alongside the private sector and supporting supply chains across the UK.

The Aberdeen HQ will host the company’s main corporate functions, supply chain work and major development projects, including ambitions in deep-water offshore wind.

Dan McGrail, CEO of Great British Energy, said: “Aberdeen is the perfect location for Britain’s publicly-owned energy company.

“It is a world- leading energy hub and has been crucial to our energy security for decades.”

The GPA-led fit-out will take place through the summer, with changes including a new reception area, meeting rooms, improved lighting and ventilation, redecoration and new carpeting.

Marischal Square was confirmed as GBE’s permanent home in February and will be leased and managed by the GPA throughout the organisation’s tenure.

The choice of Aberdeen is politically important, placing the new clean energy company in the city long associated with the North Sea oil and gas industry.

Ministers hope GBE can help anchor the energy transition in Scotland while supporting investment, jobs and supply chain growth.
