Offshore Energies UK has urged the new Scottish Government to publish an updated energy strategy within its first 100 days in office.

The industry body said mounting pressure on Scotland’s industrial base, including the closures of Grangemouth refinery and Mossmorran, has increased concerns over job losses and long-term industrial decline.

OEUK said Scotland’s offshore energy sector supports more than 128,000 jobs and contributes £24 billion to the economy each year, but warned that policy uncertainty is slowing investment and increasing reliance on imports.

The organisation is calling for a refreshed strategy that supports homegrown oil and gas alongside continued renewable energy deployment.

Among its recommendations are reforms to Transmission Network Use of System charges, support for the Oil and Gas Price Mechanism and stronger backing for Scotland’s offshore energy supply chain.

OEUK boss David Whitehouse said: “Scotland has a world-class energy system spanning oil and gas, offshore wind, hydrogen and carbon capture, but without clear, consistent policy, we risk losing investment, jobs and industrial capability at a critical moment.

A refreshed energy strategy within the first 100 days would send a clear signal that government is serious about backing a modern industrial Scotland, secured by homegrown energy – bringing down costs, unlocking investment and keeping industry here.”

OEUK also called for continued licensing of domestic oil and gas production, greater regional decision-making powers and stronger collaboration between industry, trade unions, regulators and government.

The organisation said policy clarity would be essential to maintaining economic growth and securing Scotland’s future energy system.
