National Grid DSO has unveiled a new Strategic Roadmap designed to support the transition towards a smarter, more flexible and lower-carbon energy system across the Midlands, South Wales and the South West.
The roadmap outlines the organisation’s priorities through to 2028 and beyond, focusing on improving network transparency, expanding flexibility markets and supporting the growing demand for cleaner electricity.
It also aims to help communities and businesses reduce emissions while maintaining reliable and affordable energy supplies.
As renewable generation, electric vehicles and low-carbon technologies continue to expand, electricity networks are under increasing pressure to operate more efficiently.
National Grid says its DSO’s strategy places flexibility at the centre of this transition, enabling energy demand and supply to be balanced more effectively while reducing reliance on carbon-intensive generation.
The roadmap was developed in collaboration with stakeholders and introduces updated strategic objectives linked directly to customer and environmental outcomes.
These include improving local energy planning, increasing data accessibility and accelerating customer connections to the grid.
Cathy McClay, Managing Director of National Grid DSO, said: “As we move into the final years of RIIO-ED2, it’s important that we remain focused on delivering the outcomes we’ve promised to customers and stakeholders, while continuing to prepare for the future needs of the energy system.
“This roadmap sets out clearly how we will continue to develop a more flexible, transparent and customer-focused distribution system, shaped through collaboration with stakeholders across our region and the wider industry.”
The roadmap forms part of wider industry efforts to support decarbonisation, improve grid resilience and create a cleaner, more sustainable electricity network for the future.
