EDF has rolled out an AI powered tool designed to explain energy bills to customers in plain English as suppliers increasingly turn to automation to improve service and cut pressure on call centres.
The new “Bill Explainer” system uses artificial intelligence to break down charges usage and account details into a more accessible step by step digital experience for EDF’s 3.4 million residential and small business customers.
The supplier says the tool analyses each customer’s account individually and provides tailored explanations of what they are paying for and why helping users navigate one of the most common frustrations in the energy market.
The move follows a pilot involving more than 58,000 customers where EDF says engagement was strong and billing related enquiries fell by 5.6% among those using the system.
Mark Askew Solutions and Automation Director at EDF Energy said: “Energy bills haven’t always been easy to understand. Our ‘Bill Explainer’ tool changes that by making information clearer and more accessible so customers can feel more confident about what they’re paying for and why.”
The wider significance is how quickly AI is moving into frontline utility operations. Rather than simply powering chatbots, EDF is using the technology to interpret complex billing data and present it in a more human way.
Suppliers have long faced criticism over confusing bills particularly during periods of volatile energy prices.
