A century after the UK pioneered coordinated electricity systems with the Central Electricity Board, the sector is preparing for a new era focused on sustainability and decarbonisation.
Electricity network operators plan to invest more than £120bn by 2050 to modernise infrastructure and enable a cleaner energy system.
This transformation will support the shift away from fossil fuels while helping households and businesses access reliable, low-carbon power.
The programme will also accelerate adoption of low carbon technologies, allowing consumers to reduce direct fossil fuel use.
Overall energy demand could fall by 47% by 2050, highlighting the role of smarter, more efficient networks in cutting emissions.
The Energy Networks Association said today’s grid already delivers over 99.99% reliability, providing a strong foundation for the transition.
Innovation is central to this progress, with projects including satellite monitoring and AI modelling helping networks adapt to climate pressures.
Around 26,000 skilled workers are supporting this transformation, ensuring infrastructure evolves to meet rising electrification demand.
The forthcoming Electricity Networks Sector Growth Plan is expected to outline wider economic benefits, including support for emerging low-carbon industries.
Lawrence Slade said: “Energy infrastructure is evolving quickly to deal with the demands being placed on it, and it’s good to remember the titanic effort that is going into building a grid that can ensure UK homes and businesses can get the affordable, secure and clean home grown power they need.”
He added: “In the 100 years since the UK’s grid formally came into being it has grown into a reliable, cost effective and innovative national network that countries around the world seek to emulate – and the next 100 years are set to build on and surpass this heritage.”
