UK Power Networks has launched what it says is a UK-first process to automatically approve new vehicle-to-grid connection requests within seconds, helping to speed up the rollout of flexible EV technology.

Working with Octopus Energy, the network operator is now enabling faster approvals for EV chargers that support vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, technology. This allows electric cars not only to charge but also to export electricity back to the grid during peak periods.

The company said low carbon technology applications normally require approval from the local network operator, but its new system is extending instant approvals to V2G. UK Power Networks already automatically approves 80% of low carbon technology applications, well above the national average.

Trials are under way with EV owners in Amersham, Worthing and Enfield. UK Power Networks said the new process will help manufacturers and installers test equipment and prepare for wider commercial deployment.
