The Vauxhall Mokka X was the used car which offered dealers the greatest profit potential last month in the sub-£10,000 retail bracket, Dealer Auction has said.

The digital remarketing platform’s Retail Market Monitor ranking for February placed the Mokka X in the top spot with an average retail margin of £2,250, ahead of the Citroen C3 with a £2,225 margin and the Kia Sportage with a £2,075 margin.

Completing the top ten were the Ford Focus (£2,060 margin), Mini Hatch (2,050), Nissan Juke (£2,000), Ford Kuga (£1,995), Vauxhall Insignia (£1,990), Volkswagen Golf (£1,975), and the Mokka X’s predecessor, the Vauxhall Mokka (£1,900).

The Focus was the fastest-selling used car in the chart, averaging 25 days to sell. Dealer Auction said its own average days to sell metric had hit record lows, with listings on average taking 2.62 days from ‘first seen’ to sold.

The ranking for used cars retailing at more than £10,000 saw the Land Rover Discovery Sport taking first place, with an average retail margin of £4,150, ahead of the Vauxhall Corsa (£2,800).

Kieran TeeBoon, marketplace director at Dealer Auction, said: “It’s brilliant to see the pace – and volume – at which used cars are selling. Profit potential is a key metric, but so is ensuring a quick sale and getting that cash back in the bank.”

Used car dealers ‘wary of stock availability’

TeeBoon noted current industry commentary focusing on the effects of Covid-19 pandemic-era stock shortages, which saw reduced supply of new vehicles in 2020 and 2021.

He said: “The current news points to dealers being wary of stock availability. This is where the proven models come into their own.

“It’s no coincidence that the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Insignia are staking claims in the profit charts. These reliable runarounds have stood the test of time, and it makes sense they’re proving a popular choice with customers and dealers who are setting their sights on older models. It will be interesting to see how this trend develops.”
