The UK’s first Circular Construction Hub has launched in the Royal Docks, supporting the Mayor of London’s ambition for the capital to become zero carbon by 2030.

Set to become the largest facility of its kind in Europe, the hub will recycle and reuse construction materials that would otherwise go to landfill.

It forms the first phase of a wider Circular Economy Village planned for Silvertown in the London Borough of Newham.

The initiative is backed by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and is being delivered with charity Tipping Point East and Newham Council.

It will support low carbon construction as plans progress to deliver more than 36,000 homes and 55,000 jobs across the Royal Docks.

The hub is expected to divert at least 950 tonnes of materials from landfill over five years, reducing embodied carbon in new developments. The construction sector produces 62% of the UK’s waste, with more than five million tonnes still sent to landfill each year.
