Nineteen vehicle manufacturers have committed to SERMI within days of the scheme being approved for launch in the UK.
Following confirmation of the UK go live date on February 2, the Independent Garage Association (IGA) said the response from manufacturers had been overwhelmingly positive, with further brands expected to join.
The early uptake signals growing industry support for SERMI, which provides a secure and standardised route for independent garages to access vehicle security related information.
Manufacturers already committed to the scheme include Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Ford, Jaguar, Jeep, Lancia, Land Rover, Maserati, Nissan, Opel, Peugeot, Ram Trucks, Toyota and Vauxhall.
Stuart James, IGA chief executive, said: “The response from vehicle manufacturers has been extremely positive.
“To have 19 on board within days of notifying them of UK approval shows just how important SERMI is to the future of our sector.
“This scheme will positively change the operational capability of independent garages and provide something we simply haven’t had in the UK before.”
The IGA said SERMI will not be relevant to every independent garage, but stressed the importance of businesses being fully informed before deciding whether to adopt the scheme.
James added: “It’s essential that garages are secure in their own minds about whether SERMI is something they need.
“Our role is to continue providing clear and accurate information so businesses can make an informed choice that’s right for them.”
The association also reminded garages that the SERMI setup process includes Government DBS checks, which can take up to two weeks or longer in some cases, and should be factored into planning.
The IGA said it will continue to communicate with members and the wider independent sector as SERMI adoption progresses.
